Completion of four years of Hebrew School and registration for the fifth year is a minimum requirement prior to celebrating the occasion of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Congregation B’nai Tikvah. In striving to maintain the highest standards of Jewish education, we fully expect that students will regularly attend and graduate from
Religious School at the end of the Zayin (7th grade) class.
In addition to learning key skills in Religious School, students will participate in the following programs to specifically prepare for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah:
Family Bar/Bat Mitzvah Workshops - During 6th grade
A series of three workshops with students and their parents on Sunday mornings during the 6th grade year. Discussions include what it means to reach this important Jewish milestone and understand the requirements and how to best plan for a meaningful and successful experience.
Masorah and Nevi-im classes - During 6th grade
Fourteen weekly sessions during regular class time where students learn the basic Bar/Bat Mitzvah skills such as chanting the blessings, and learning the tropes – the method for chanting the Torah and Haftarah.
Individual Study with Professional Ritual Staff
9-12 months prior to Bar/Bat Mitzvah
Upon successful completion of the Masorah/Nevi-im program, students attend weekly sessions with the Ritual Director or Ritual Educator. Students focus on mastering their individual Haftarah and Torah portions and refining the other skills needed for their becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah..
